① What at can I do (    ) for you today?

wh疑問文の「3点セット」
wh疑問文の基本をおさらい。wh疑問文は、情報の欠落を相手に埋めてもらうタイプの疑問文。

1. 文中には埋めてもらうべき空所 (    ) がある。ここでは do の目的語、ここが疑問のターゲットとなっている。

2. また、空所に何が入るのか – 「人」なのか「モノ」なのか、などを指定する wh語(ここでは what)

3. さらに疑問文であることを示す疑問形(can I)が加わる

この「空所・wh語・疑問形」がwh疑問文の「3点セット」

目的語説明型(SVOC)
この文は get 以降が目的語説明型。目的語説明型は、目的語と説明語句との間に「=(イコール)」あるいは「主語 – 述語」の関係がある形

この文では、説明語句は appraise(評価・鑑定する)の過去分詞。過去分詞が「~される」という意味なので「this plastic figure が鑑定されるという状況を get する」という意味関係となる

「~のように見える・思える・感じる」 といった表現

まずは It seems that ~ という形。

いちいち分解して考えていては、スピーディーな会話はできないので、まとめて「1語」として覚えること!

「印象」に関わる表現

① It looks like this is fake.
It appears this is fake.

It feels like this is fake.

→ 印象を伝える定番の形。いろいろな語句が使える

appear は「見える」で look よりも「かっこいい言い方」な印象

appear as if ~(あたかも~のように見える)といったしゃれた言い方も似合う。「見える」なので seem よりも表層的な印象

Dave seems frantic.
Dave appears frantic.

**frantic:

This carpet feels nice and soft.

→ 「A=B [に見える]」など、説明型オーバーラッピングも印象を述べるのに便利な形

 

③ I got the impression that he was lying.

He gave the impression that he was hiding something.

→ impression(印象)を使って「印象」を伝えることもできる

 

④ It’s giving me good vibes.

→ vibe は「感じ」「雰囲気」。カジュアルな表現だが覚えておく価値があり

He comes across as a good person.

→ come across は「印象を与える」。 across は「横切って」で印象が伝わってくる感触
