Grammar and Vocabulary

感情を表す動詞から派生した形容詞

They all seem excited to be in Japan.

excited は動詞 excite (興奮させる) の過去分詞から派生した形容詞

過去分詞は「~される」なので「興奮させられる→興奮して」と人の感情を形容する

同様の形容詞であっても

exciting は「興奮させるような」

と、事物を形容する表現であることに注意!

感情を表す動詞から派生した形容詞では

「過去分詞 = 人を形容」
「動詞-ing形 = 事物を形容」

のパターンが一般的

staff

I’m looking forward to having dinner with our Osaka sales staff tonight.

この文の staff (職員・スタッフ) は、限定詞もつかず複数形にもなっていない「裸」の形。この形が可能なのは、これが不可算名詞 (数えられない名詞) 扱いだから

ちなみに「職員」を数えたいときは、

staff member
staffer

という言い方がある

Pronunciation Polish

R: All right, guys. It’s time for the pronunciation polish corner. Today’s sentence is,

There are many first-time visitors, I suppose.

We have quite a few points that we’ll be going over today. They’ll cover linking, the combination of sounds, and the disappearing sound at the end of the word. Let’s go through them together. Repeat after me,

– Thereare

Keep going,

– firs(t)time

Here that, it’s the combined “t,”

– firs(t)time

Great. Now, let’s try the last part of the sentence,

– visitors, I suppose

Excellent work. All right. Full sentence,

– Thereare many firs(t)time visitors, I suppose.

And one more time. Focus on the rhythm,

– Thereare many firs(t)time visitors, I suppose.

Excellent work.

Ending

O: Roza, you’ve lived in Kyoto, right?

R: Yeah!

O: Did you go there recently?

R: Ah, you know what, I haven’t been there recently. I used to go at least once a year, especially in the autumn to see the momiji.

O: Uh-huh.

D: Oh, that’s nice. I haven’t been Kyoto in, oh gosh, almost ten years. I need to get back there.
