I saw something on the train that really surprised me.

**elderly:
**cane:
**get on the train:
**priority seat:

**give up one’s seat:

Grammar & Vocabulary

① Can I tell you about something that happened yesterday?

関係代名詞修飾1
この文の something that happened yesterday は関係代名詞節修飾。

関係代名詞節 that (    ) happened yesterday には happened(起こった)の主語がなく、「(    ) は昨日起こりました」という意味となっている。

この空所と先行詞(修飾される名詞)something が組み合わされ、「昨日起こった – こと」という意味を結んでいる。

ちなみにこの文で that は I think that ~ の that と同じ。something をその節名の後続節に「導いて」いる。

② I respect people who (    ) give up their seats for others.

関係代名詞修飾2
people 以下が関係代名詞節修飾。give up 以下の主語が空所 (    ) であり、その空所と people が組み合わされ「ほかの人に席を譲る人たち」」となる。

who が使われているのは、who は「誰」で人を指定する wh語だから。who があることにより、who 以下の空所と結ばれるのは「人」 – people であることを明確に示している。

Key Sentence & Feel English

I respect people who give up their seats for others.

respectは誰かを「すごいなぁ」と仰ぎ見ることではなく、たとえ意見が違っても、そんなふうになりたいと思わなくても、そこに素晴らしさを見ること。

この文にもそうした「素晴らしい人たちだなあ」という感覚が感じられる。

★respect の感覚★

① respect our elders
respect different cultures

respect privacy
respect human rights

respect the law

→ respect できるのは人だけではない。敬意を払い尊重すべきもの一般に使う。

② respect each other
respect each other’s rights

→ よく目にする使い方。相手のすばらしさを認めることは英語に限らずコミュニケーションの根幹にある態度

③ Ms. Brown is not a very entertaining teacher, but most students respect her.

→ respect は表面的な印象ではなく、人や物事の本質的な価値を見据えた表現

Practice

C: OK. It’s practice time!!

This time we have the verb “respect.”

If you look at it closely, you see “SPECT.”

That means “to look at” like “spectator” or “spectacles.”

So this naturally led to the idea of “looking at someone or something that has special qualities that deserve our “admiration” or “esteem.”

So with that in mind, let’s practice together.

R: And I hope you will respect my advice to think only in English.

Expression in Action

①私は私の両親を尊敬しています。

②たとえ意見が食い違っても、私たちはお互いの意見を尊重すべきです。
**even if ~:

③私は彼と政治的な見解を一切共有していませんが、それでも彼を尊敬しています。
**political views:

Ending

R: Well, everyone. I just want you to know that I really respect your progress.

And I think you’re doing great. So just keep going!

C: That’s right. There I repeat what we always say, the three words; the same words, three times. Are you ready, Roza?

R: I’m ready.

C: Practice, practice, practice.
