**enjoy ~ing: ～するのを楽しむ、～するのが好き
Oh, did you? Yeah, I enjoy spending a little time there every afternoon.

**seem to ~: ～のように見える・思える
**bloom: 花が咲く
**nicely: 上手に、うまく
The tulips seem to be blooming nicely. Are they new this season?
チューリップがきれいに咲いているようですね。今シーズ ンの新しい花ですか？
**plant: ～を植える
Thank you. I planted a few new ones.
ありがとうございます。いくつか新しく植えたんですよ。
※a few new ones の ones は、名詞のくり返しを避けるために使われる代名詞です。ここの one = tulips ですね！
**brighten: ～を明るくする
They brighten the whole street.
通り全体が明るくなりますね。
**inspire: 元気づける、明るくさせる、感激させる
Your yard always inspires me to try harder with mine.
あなたの庭を見ると、私も 自分の庭をもっと頑張らなきゃっていつも思うんです。
**That’s kind of you to say. : そう言ってもらえて、うれしいです。
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
目的語説明型 (SVOC) 1
I saw you working in your garden yesterday.
昨日、あなたが庭で作業しているのを見ました。
この型は、目的語とその後ろに置かれた説明語句との間に「= (イコール)」あるいは「主語・述語」の関係がある形
この文は、
you が working ~ しているところを saw (見た)
ということ
説明語句が「動詞-ing形」の working なので「働いているところを見た」ということになる
目的語説明型 (SVOC) 2
Your yard always inspires me to try harder with mine.
あなたの庭は、私のものについてもっと一生懸命頑張るように、いつも私を奮い立たせます。
この文は、目的語の後ろの説明語句が「to不定詞」
to のイメージは矢印 (→)
そのため、目的語が to以下の行為に「進む」ことを意味している
この場合、
me が try harder ~ するよう inspire (～を奮い立たせる・駆り立てる) する
ということ

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
I saw you working in your garden yesterday.
– Oh, did you?
ああ、そうだったのですか？
相手の発言に興味を示す方法に「あいづち疑問文」の使用がある
相手の発言を、軽い疑問文にして「そうなのですか？」を表す
この例文は、先行文が一般動詞の過去形 (saw) なので、did you? となっている
①助動詞
I can give you a ride to the station if you want. – Oh, can you? That helps a lot.
よかったら駅まで送るよ。―いいの？すごく助かるよ。
助動詞のある文へのあいづち。先行文が I can ~ なので、can you? となっている
②現在完了形
I’ve already talked to the client about the schedule. – Oh, have you? That’s great.
スケジュールの件、もうクライアントと話しました。―あ、そうなんですか？助かります。
現在完了形の have も助動詞。先行文が I’ve ~ なので have you? となる
③be動詞
Sarah is joining your team next month. – Oh, is she? That’s great.
サラが来月あなたのチームに入るよ。―え、ほんと？それはありがたいな。
先行文が Sarah is ~ なので、is she? で受ける
Sarah に対し代名詞 she を使って、極力軽い形を作っている
④繰り返す
I tried hard, but I just couldn’t meet the deadline.
頑張ったけど、締め切りに間に合わなかったんだ。
a. Couldn’t meet the deadline?
締め切りに間に合わなかったの？
↑相手の発言をそのまま繰り返す↑
b. So you missed the deadline?
つまり、締め切りに遅れたってこと？
↑自分の言葉で言いかえて繰り返す↑
でも、相手の発言への興味を示すことができる
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[軽い疑問文であいづちを打ちましょう]
I’m going to Hamamatsu next week. (来週、私は浜松に行きます) と言われて。
「あ、そうなの？何回か行ったことがあるよ。きれいな都市だよね。どのくらいそこにいるの？」
【解答例】
Oh, are you? I’ve been there a few times. It’s a beautiful city. How long will you be there?
【解説】
・2文目は経験を表す現在完了形
・how long は「長さ」を表す大きなwh語
