Lesson 122 発言パターン 指示② – 助動詞類などを使った指示
★Opening
D: Be careful out there, folks.
皆さん、外では気をつけてね。
☆Words & Phrases
**twist one’s ankle: (~の) 足首をひねる
Ouch. Mmm… It looks like I twisted my ankle. – Are you all right? That looked pretty bad.
いたた。うーん…。どうやら足をひねったみたいだ – 大丈夫ですか?かなりひどそうでしたよ。
※ankle [æŋkl] の発音に注意!!uncle [ʌŋkl] だと「おじさん」を捻ることになってしまいます😂
**if you insist: どうしてもと言うなら
I wouldn’t take that chance. Let me drive you. – Well…if you insist.
そんな危ない賭けはしないほうがいいですよ。私が車でお連れします – うーん…そこまでおっしゃるなら。
※if you insist は、相手の申し出を一回断ったが、さらに相手が重ねて申し入れてきたときに使います。「そこまで言うなら」です!
**feel free to ~: 自由に~する、遠慮なく〜する
**That’s very kind of you.: ご親切に。
Feel free to call me if you ever need help. – That’s very kind of you.
何かお困りのことがあれば、いつでも連絡してください – ご親切にどうも。
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
説明型オーバーラッピング (SVC)
That looked pretty bad.
それはかなり悪く見えました。
この形は、be動詞文と同様に、説明型 -「主語の説明」
したがって、この文の基本的な意味は
That = pretty bad
ただ、ここでは意味の薄いbe動詞ではなく、looked (見えた) が使われているため、その意味が文全体にオーバーラップし
That = pretty bad (に見えた)
となっている
be動詞文と同じように、この文を「見る」ことがポイント
would
I wouldn’t take that chance.
私ならそんな賭けはしないでしょう。
would は「〜でしょうねぇ」という will の控えめ表現
ここでは「私なら〜でしょうねぇ」という仮定条件が織り込まれているため、現実的な強い will ではなく、控えめな would が使われている
こうした would の使い方、ぜひマスターしてください!
ちなみに chance の基本イメージは「可能性」-「好機」「リスク」のどちらも表すが、ここでは「そんなリスクは冒さないでしょう」ということ

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
You’d better go to the hospital and get it checked out.
あなたは、病院に行ってそれを診てもらったほうがいいです。
had better + 動詞原形は「~したほうがいい」と訳されるが、ニュアンスに注意が必要!
このフレーズは「明太子おにぎりのほうがいいなぁ」といった悠長な表現ではなく、切迫した状況で使われる「~したほうがいい、そうしないと困ったことになる」というフレーズ
①You must
You must wear a safety helmet at all times.
常に安全ヘルメットを着用しなければなりません。
You must ~ は「~しなければならない」
命令のトーンを持つ強い指示
②You will
You WILL submit the report by tomorrow.
明日までにリポートを提出すること。
will を強く読む “You WILL ~” は話し手の意志を表す、指示・命令の表現
③You should
You should back up your files regularly.
ファイルは定期的にバックアップしたほうがいいですよ。
You should ~ は You must ~ よりやわらかい、助言・勧告に近い指示
④You are + to不定詞
You are to stay in this area until an officer arrives.
係官が到着するまでこの区域にとどまるように。
「You are + to不定詞」は、上役や組織からの公的な指示 (通達・命令)
話し手の感情は感じられない
「be動詞 + to不定詞」には「指示」「予定」「運命 (~することになる)」
など、さまざまな使い方がある
to のニュアンスはいずれも矢印 (→)
You are to ~ なら「You が to 以下に進む」
ということ
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[会社で新人に指導しています]
「仕事用の携帯電話は常に携帯しておくこと。顧客からの電話に出られない場合は、5分以内に折り返し連絡しなければなりません。例外はありません」
【解答例】
You are to carry your work phone at all times. If you miss a call from a client, you must call them back within five minutes. No exceptions.
【解説】
・You are to ~ の感情を交えない無機質な指示。できたらまさしく英語上級者!
・at all times「いつも・常に」
・client「顧客」
・call ~ back「~に折り返し電話をかける」
・them は a client を受けている。a client は単数だが、性別が不明で、him or her と述べるのが煩雑なため them で受ける
・No exceptions. は、非常に強い「例外はありません・認めません」という指示

★Ending
O: Hey David. You twisted your ankle while jogging the other day, right?
D: Ah, well, I hurt my ankle. It was actually a stress fracture. I was jogging too much too often. But it’s a lot better now. I took it easy. Thank you for a remembering.
O: Stress fracture …
R: Well David, I’m very glad you didn’t hurt your uncle.
D: Yeah, you know, he’s a nice guy. He wouldn’t deserve it.
**stress fracture: 疲労骨折
