☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
go のイメージ
How did your meeting with Justin go?
ジャスティンとのミーティングはどうでしたか?
go は「行く」という日本語ではなく「その場から去り、進んでいく」というイメージで覚えること
ここでは、ミーティングがどのように進んだのかという「流れ」を尋ねている
単語学習では、その単語の持つ「感触」をとらえるようにすること
助動詞 + 完了形
I may not have been clear.
私の言い方が、はっきりしていなかったかもしれません。
前回のレッスンで取り上げた文
may have been (助動詞 + have + 過去分詞) は、完了形のバリエーションのひ とつ
完了形は「そのときまでに」を表す形
may は「かもしれない」
なので「may + 完了形」は「~したかもしれない」となる
完了形の「そのときまでに」が感じられる

「~したいのではありません、ただ・・・する必要があるのです」
ほら、誤解がしっかり解けました!
①対比1
I’m not saying it’s bad. What I’m saying is it needs work.
だめだと言っているのではありません。改善が必要だと言っています。
対比のテクニックはまずこの形から
I didn’t say ~. What I did say was…
私は~とは言いませんでした。私が実際に言ったのは・・・でした
も使われる
did say となっているのは「実際言った」という強調
②対比2
It’s not that the idea is bad, it’s (just) that the timing is wrong.
アイデアが悪いのではありません、タイミングが悪い (というだけな) のです。
It’s not that ~, it’s (just) that ….

私が言おうとしているのは、私たちにはもっと時間が必要だということです。
相手の理解しやすい表現に言い直してもよい
What I meant to say was ~.
私が言いたかったのは~でした。
もよく使われる
④言い直し2
Let me clarify.
誤解のないように言わせてください。
言い直しの前置き
clarify「~を明確にする」
Let me put it another way.
別の言い方をさせてください。
put は「言う・書く」の代わりに使える!

【解説】
・It’s not that ~, it’s just that …. のコンビネーションを作ることができたら合格!

☆PRONUNCIATION POLISH
D: Okay guys. Will you join me for some pronunciation polish? All right. Today’s sentence is,
I don’t want to reduce options.
Today, we’ll be focusing on the pronunciation of “don’t,” “want to” and “options.” So, let’s start with “don’t.” It’s the disappearing “t,”
– don’t
– I don’t
Next, “want to.” Repeat,
– wantto
– I don’t wantto
All right. Now, let’s do “options.” The “s” is weakened,
– options
– reduce options
Let’s do the full sentence now,
– I don’t wantto reduce options.
Okay. I think you’re ready for natural speed. Let’s go!
– I don’t wantto reduce options.
One last time,
– I don’t wantto reduce options.
How was it? I hope you enjoyed today’s pronunciation polish. I did. Keep on going!
★Ending
D: Hey Sensei. Some of us are going out for drinks this evening. You’re coming, right?
ねぇ先生。今夜何人かで飲みに行くんだけど、もちろん来るよね?
O: Ah, sorry, I can’t. It’s not that I already have plans. It’s just that I don’t want to go.
ごめん、無理。予定があるわけじゃないんだ。ただ行きたくないんだよね。
D: Sensei, I may not have been clear. You’re coming.
先生、僕の説明がはっきりしていなかったかも知れません。先生は『来る』んですよね。
O: Oh yes.
あ、はい(笑)
R: Is that a threat, David?
デイビッド、それって脅し?
D: Never! It’s a promise.
まさか!「約束」だよ。
