☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
some のイメージ
Some people still love the roar of a real engine.
本物のエンジンのとどろきが好きな人もまだいます。
some のイメージは「ぼんやりとある」
数も量も定かでない人・ものがある、という感覚
Some people ~ では一群の人がぼんやりと見えている
「～という人もいる」という日本語に対応する
try to ~
And more people are trying to keep their old cars running.
そして、より多くの人が古い車を走らせ続けようとしています。
try to ~ = (これから) 〜しようと試みる・頑張る
to のイメージである矢印 (→) が「これから」のニュアンスとつながっている
try + 動詞-ing形 = ～をやってみる・試しに〜してみる
意味の違いをしっかり区別しておきましょう。

相手の言うことを言下に否定し自分の意見を通そうとしても、共感は得られない
ここでは「引いて・押せ」で、相手に受け入れられやすい流れを作っている
まず「それは興味深い」と受け入れ、そのあと自分の意見を述べている

相手の意見に対するキーセンテンスと同種の「引いて・押せ」

where 以降は「どこから来ているのか→考えていること・理由・動機」

↑もよく使われます。
④議論で 4 – かたい表現
You have a point, but I’m not sure that’s the best idea.
一理ありますが、最善の策かどうかはわかりません。

会議にも使われるかたい表現
**point: 論点・主張
⑤議論で 5 – 部分的な同意
I agree with you up to a point, but I think we’re missing something important.
ある程度はあなたに賛成だけど、私たちは何か大事な点を見落としている気がします。
部分的な同意を表すかたい表現
**up to a point: ある点まで → ある程度
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[会議での話し合いです]
We have to raise our prices. (値上げしないといけません) と言われて。
「言いたいことはわかるけど、そんなに単純じゃありません。数字をちょっと見てみましょう。私たちは何とかコストを削減できるかもしれません」
【解答例】
I get where you’re coming from, but it’s not that simple. Let’s take a look at the numbers. Maybe we can cut costs somehow.
【解説】
・that simple は「そんなに単純な」 – this や that は形容詞も修飾できる
・take a look at ~ は「～をちょっと見る」で、軽い感触
・numbers と複数形なのは、見るべき数字が複数あるため
・somehow は「方法」の how に some – 「何らかのやり方で → どうにかして」
