**seriously: まじめに、本気で、まじめな話だが
**knee-deep: 膝の深さまでの、膝までつかっている (はまり込んで身動きがとれないことを表す)

**allowance: 手当、小遣い

☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
目的語説明型 (SVOC)
Mom is asking us to mow the lawn this afternoon.
お母さんが今日の午後、私たちに芝刈りをするように頼んでいます。
この文では説明語句に「to不定詞」を用いた目的語説明型 (SVOC) が使われている
目的語説明型 (SVOC) は目的語と説明語句との間に「=(イコール)」あるいは「主語・述語」の関係がある形
「to不定詞」は、目的語がto以下の行為に「進む」というニュアンスを加えている
そこで、この文は「私たちが今日の午後芝刈りをすることに進むように asking (頼んでいる)」という意味となる
指定ルール
I’m kind of busy today.
今日私はちょっと忙しいのです。
kind of ~ は明確な表現を避けて「ちょっと～」とするフレーズ
このフレーズの位置に注意！
busy の前に置かれている – この位置どりには「指定ルール: 指定は前に置く」が働いている
kind of はどのくらい忙しいのか、busy のレベル指定を行っているため、前からの修飾が自然

「『忙しい』は busy」でも十分事足りるが、少しニュアンスを加えてみる
この表現の “have got” は “have (持っている)” と同じ
全体で「皿の上にたくさん載っている」ということ
抱えている仕事が多いことを表している
①基本
I’m a bit busy right now.
I’m a bit occupied right now.
I’m a bit tied up right now.
今ちょっと忙しいのです。
busy は単に「忙しい」
occupied「(空間などが) 有されている → 手が離せない」
tied up「縛られている → 自由が利かない → 手が離せない」
②バタバタ
Things have been hectic.
非常に慌ただしいのです。
バタバタして落ち着きのない状況を表すのが hectic (非常に忙しい)
things や my work など、状況を形容する
I’m crazy busy.
すごく忙しい。
I’ve been working nonstop all day.
一日中ずっと働きっぱなしです。
など、crazy busy や nonstop もこの状況ではよく使われる
③精神的重圧
I’m a bit overwhelmed right now.
今はちょっと、いっぱいいっぱいなんだ。
仕事に圧倒されている感じを表すのが overwhelmed (圧倒されている)
I’m stretched thin at work.
仕事で手が回りません。
stretched thin は「薄く引き伸ばされている」で、余裕のなさを表している
④スケジュール過密
My schedule is packed today.
私のスケジュールは今日いっぱいです。
packed のイメージは「ぎっしり」、よく使われる表現。仕事で言いそう
⑤どっぷり
I’m knee-deep in homework.
宿題にどっぷりつかっています。
忙しさに「どっぷりつかっている」という表現
ここでは「膝まで」
忙しさがさらに進んだ場合、
waist-deep (腰までつかっている)
neck-deep (首までつかっている)
という表現を使う

[同僚に仕事を頼まれて]

【解説】
・「手が離せない」に tied up が使えたら合格！(ほかの表現でもOK)
・in sight は「見える範囲に」
・Maybe ask Chelsea? は Maybe のあとに you should [could] を補うとわかりやすい。気軽な表現
・might be able to は「できるかもしれませんね」might は may の控えめ表現
