この文のbe動詞 were は、過去を表しているわけではない
この were は、接客のプロがよく使う丁寧表現現在形
are you thinking だと、直接的な生々しい感触となるので、過去形で距離をとって丁寧な表現としている
丁寧さを表す際は、直接的な表現からいかに距離をとるかが腕の見せどころ
then のイメージ

then は「そのとき・それなら・それから」など、さまざまな訳となるが、イメージは「視線の移動」
