Lesson 128 発言パターン 指示⑦ – 助動詞を用いた禁止
★Opening
R: Hey guys. So, are you getting a little bit used to the business English we’re practicing? I hope so.
D: That’s right. We’re doing business. Business? Busy-ness? Business! All right guys, let’s go!
☆Words & Phrases
**access: ~にアクセスする、~に接続する
Just so I know, how did you access the file from home?
確認のためですが、自宅からどうやってそのファイルにアクセスしたんですか?
**personal account: 個人のアカウント
**be against company policy: 会社の方針・規則に反する
I emailed it to my personal account. – Jason, you know that’s against company policy.
自分の個人メールアカウントに送ったんです – ジェイソン、それが会社の方針違反だとわかっているでしょう。社員は会社のファイルを個人アカウントに送ってはいけません。
※email は、本来は名詞で使われていますが、この文では動詞の位置で使われています。「英語は配置の言葉」なので、動詞の位置にあれば、それは動詞です!
**should not ~ under any circumstances: どんな状況でも~してはいけない
I was just trying to get the work done faster. – I understand, but you shouldn’t do that under any circumstances.
ただ、仕事をもっと早く終わらせようとしていただけなんです – その気持ちはわかります、でも、どんな状況でもそんなことをしてはいけません。
※under any circumstances は「いかなる状況の下であっても」
**secure: 安全な
Customer data may not leave our secure system. – Understood. It won’t happen again.
顧客データを当社の安全なシステムの外に出してはいけないんです – 承知しました。もう二度としません。
※It won’t happen again. (もう二度としません) は、怒られたときによく使うようです🫡
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
just so I know
Just so I know, how did you access the file from home?
確認のためですが、あなたは自宅からどうやってそのファイルにアクセスしたのですか?
just so I know は「ただ私が知るために・把握するために」
so が「目的」を表す節を導いている
just (~だけ) に「あなたを責めているわけじゃない。ただ事実関係を確かめるため」と、他意のなさが込められている
似た表現に、
just so you know
お知らせまでに
こちらは「特に何か行動してほしいわけじゃないんだけど・一応言っておくけど」というニュアンス
言い訳定番表現 1
I was just trying to get the work done faster.
私は、ただ仕事をもっと早く終わらせようとしていただけです。
この文の、
was just trying to ~
~しようとしていただけです
は、言い訳の定番表現
just に「悪気はなかった」という気持ちが込められている
try + to不定詞 は「(これから) 〜しようと試みる・頑張る」
「これから」が感じられる「to不定詞」とのコンビネーション「to不定詞」とのコンビネーション

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
Employees must not send company files to personal accounts.
社員は会社のファイルを個人アカウントに送ってはいけません。
禁止を表す助動詞表現の筆頭が must not
「絶対だめです」という Don’t ~ と同様の強さを持つ禁止表現
ちなみに、must not の短縮形は mustn’t
発音に注意!
最初の t は発音せず「マッスントゥ」となる
①should not
You shouldn’t do that under any circumstances.
どんな状況でもそれをすべきではありません。
should は must と同種の、よりソフトな意味を持つ助動詞
should not は「~すべきではない」、must not よりやわらかな禁止表現になる
I don’t think you should ~
とすれば、さらにソフト。
②may not
Customer data may not leave our secure system.
顧客データを当社の安全なシステムの外に出してはなりません。
may は立場が上の者から下に「許可を与える」助動詞
したがって may not は「上→下」へのフォーマル感のある禁止となる
ここでも、会社が規則として認めていない、と言っている
may not に短縮形はない (✖ mayn’t)
その理由のひとつがこのフォーマルな感触なのでしょうね
③cannot
You cannot bring food into the theater.
劇場内に食べ物を持ち込んではいけません。
cannot [can’t] は、いちばん使い勝手のいい禁止表現かもしれない
must not が話し手による「絶対だめ」
may not が権威を背景とした「許可しません」
であるのに対し、こちらは何も特殊なニュアンスがない「とにかくできませんよ」であるため
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[教授が学期の初めに授業のルールを説明しています]
「私のコースではデジタル機器は使いません。学生は電子機器の使用は禁止です。授業への持ち込みもできません、ノートをとるためであってもです」
【解答例】
My courses are low-tech. Students may not use electronics. You cannot bring them to class – not even for note-taking.
【解説】
・may not の公的禁止、cannot の「〜できません」が使えればOK!
・low-tech は「ハイテクではない」、デジタル機器 が使えないということ
・electronics は「電子機器」
・cannot は通常分かち書きにしないことも覚えておくこと
☆PRONUNCIATION POLISH
R: Okay guys. Well, I know what you can bring to the next section, yourself, and your voice to practice pronunciation. Today’s sentence is,
Employees must not send company files to personal accounts.
Today we’ll go over the weakened sound at the end of the words “must not send.” And the /ə/ sound in “to” as well as the linking between “personal accounts.” All right. Let’s start with “must not send.” Repeat after me,
– must not
– must not send
Okay. Let’s move on to “to.” Repeat,
– to
– to personalaccounts
All right. Let’s connect it all in one smooth sentence. Ready?
– Employees must not send company files to personalaccounts.
All right. I think you’re ready for natural speed,
– Employees must not send company files to personalaccounts.
All right. That was great. How’d you do? Keep on practicing and keep on going.
