Lesson 131 発言パターン 警告
☆Words & Phrases
**Hang on.: ちょっと待って。
Hang on. I just got a text from my roommate.
ちょっと待って。ルームメートからメッセージが来た。
※Hang on. (ちょっと待って。) と、反射的に使えるように練習しておきましょう!
**even: ~さえ
Don’t even think about reading it while you’re driving.
運転中にそれを読もうなんて、絶対に考えないで。
It’ll only take a second.
ほんの1秒で済むよ。
※1秒 (a second) を、取って使う (take) →1秒かかる、です
**keep one’s eye(s) on ~: ~から目を離さない、~を注意深く見守る
**cause: ~を引き起こす、~をもたらす
**consequence: 結果、帰結
No, Jake. Keep your eyes on the road. If you cause an accident, there’ll be serious consequences.
だめ、ジェイク。前を見て運転して。もし事故を起こしたら、深刻なことになるよ。
**~ can wait: ~はあとでいい
You’re right. I’ll check it later. – Good. The message can wait.
そのとおりだね。あとで確認するよ – それでいいの。メッセージは待ってくれるよ。
※The message can wait. とっても英語らしい表現です☺日本語ではなかなか使わないですよね。ニュアンスは「メッセージは後回しでいい」ですね
**Safety first.: 安全第一。
OK, OK. Safety first. – Exactly. That’s all I’m asking.
わかった、わかった。安全第一だね – そのとおり。それだけをお願いしているの。
※That’s all I’m asking は、関係代名詞節による修飾が行われています。all が I’m asking を説明する形になっています
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
禁止表現をもうひとつ
Don’t even think about reading it while you’re driving.
運転中にそれを読もうなんて、絶対に考えないで。
Lesson 127~129 でさまざまな禁止表現を学んだ。もうひとつ覚えておこう
Don’t even think about ~
~を考えることさえするな
「絶対するな」という禁止の意味
while は「~している間」。イメージは「(while前後の) 2つの出来事が同時に起こっている」
意志の will
I‘ll check it later.
私はそれをあとでチェックしますよ。
助動詞 will のイメージは「見通す」 – トンネルの向こうの景色を眺めるように、ありありと未来の出来事を眺めているイメージ
それが生み出す使い方のひとつが、この文の「意志 (~するよ)」
未来を眺め、そこで自分が起こす行為を述べる
あらかじめ決心していたのではなく、その場で「~するよ」と決定する
頭の中で決定のクリック音が鳴ったような感触で使われる

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
If you cause an accident, there’ll be serious consequences.
もし事故を起こしたら、深刻な結果になります。
「If ~, + consequences」は警告の決まり文句
「もしやったら、大変なことになる」と、具体的にどうなるかを言わないところに、脅しめいた迫力がある
①warnを用いる
I’m warning you, don’t go in there.
警告しておくが、中に入るな。
warn (~に警告する) を使った警告のフレーズ。警官や教師が使いそう
ほかに
Go ahead if you want, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
好きにしろ、でも警告しなかったとは言うなよ。
も定番の表現
②tell などを用いる
I’m telling you, that’s a bad idea.
言っておくけど、それはまずい考えだ。
I’m telling you は単に「言っているでしょう」だが、警告にも使うことができる
Mark my words, ~
覚えておきなさい、~
も定番。「今にわかるから」ということ
③had better を用いる
You’d better be careful.
気をつけたほうがいい。
切迫した状況で使われる had better も警告として使うことができる
or else [otherwise] ~ (さもないと~) を加え、その帰結を述べることもよくある
You’d better be careful, or else you’ll get hurt.
気をつけたほうがいいぞ、さもないとけがするよ。
などのように使う
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[パイを作りながらパートナーに]
「ちょうど今、パイをオーブンから出したところ。でも言っておくけど、触っちゃだめ。まだ焼き型がものすごく熱いから」
【解答例】
I just took the pie out of the oven. I’m warning you though, don’t touch it. The pan is still extremely hot.
【解説】
・out of ~ は「~から (外に)」
・though は「~だが」- 前の文脈を受けている
・extremely「極端に・とても」
☆PRONUNCIATION POLISH
D: Okay everyone. It’s time for today’s pronunciation polish. I’m telling you, it’s a good one. All right. Here’s today’s phrase,
If you cause an accident, there’ll be serious consequences.
Okay. We have a couple of main points to zoom in on today. So, let’s begin. First up, we have a couple of schwas here. First is the “you” at the start,
– If you
All right. Next, we’ll join up “cause an accident,”
– causeanaccident
The “t” in “accident” will also disappear. Remember, there’s a pause here so,
– causeanaccident
– If you causeanaccident
All right. Next up, there’s the second schwa,
– there’ll be
– there’ll be serious consequences
All right. Let’s try to put those two together,
– If you causeanaccident, there’ll be serious consequences.
Okay, let’s speed it up to natural speed,
– If you causeanaccident, there’ll be serious consequences.
All right. That one was a little bit tough. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Just keep practicing and you’ll get there.
★Ending
O: Hey David. I’m warning you, don’t order “大トロ.”
D: Why not?
O: Ah, it’s way too expensive.
D: Ah, I see. Ah, don’t worry. I’m more of a “中トロ” guy, anyway.
O: Yeah, I hope you’re more of a…you know, “卵焼き” guy.
D: Oh~~!
R: Yeah David, don’t be so selfish. Don’t be ordering “大トロ” or “中トロ.”
D: What should I be getting?
R: I don’t know. But anyway, sensei, ウニ3貫お願いします!
