☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
wh節
That’s what you said yesterday.
それは、あなたが昨日言っていたことです。
この文の what 以降は wh節
wh節は疑問形を持たず、それゆえ疑問の意味を持たない文の部品
what you said yesterday は、
「あなたが昨日何を言っていた (のか)」
「あなたが昨日言っていたこと」
両用の形
wh疑問文である、
What did you say yesterday?
あなたは昨日何と言いましたか?
と明確に区別する
関係代名詞節修飾
That’s all I wanted to hear ( ).
それが、私が聞きたかったことのすべてです。
all 以降では関係代名詞節による修飾が行われている
関係代名詞節修飾は組み合わせ修飾
この文では hear の後ろに空所 ( )があ り、それが先行詞の all と組み合わされ、
「私が聞きたかった – すべて」

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
Cut the attitude.
その態度をやめなさい。
この表現は態度・発言に関する注意。命令文であるため、
Enough with ~ (~はたくさんだ → ~をやめろ)
よりも強く響く表現
attitude (態度) はここでは「生意気・反抗的な態度や口ぶり」
Cut ~ は「~をやめろ」という口語表現
Cut it out.
それをやめろ。
という状況を選ばない便利な表現もある
①口答え
Yeah, whatever. – Don’t get smart with me.
はいはい、どうでもいいです。― 生意気な口答えをするな。
親・教師 → 子どもに典型的に使う、発言をたしなめる表現
smart は「賢い」ではなく「生意気な・偉そうな」というニュアンスで使われている
②口の利き方
Watch your tone (of voice).
口の利き方に気をつけて。
What’s (with) that tone (of voice)?
その口の利き方は何だ?
tone (of voice) は「(声の) 調子」
そこから、相手の態度を含めた「口の利き方」となる
I don’t like your tone (of voice).
I don’t appreciate your tone (of voice).
君の口ぶりには感心しないな。
も使われる
③何様
Who do you think you are?
何様のつもり?
相手の尊大さ・思い上がりを非難する発言。かなり強い怒りを表す。大人の口論でもよく出てくる
Show some respect.
少しは敬意を示しなさい。
You forget yourself.
調子に乗っていますね。
も攻撃的な発言だが覚えておいて損はない
④大人同士での注意に使う rude
There’s no need to be rude.
そんな失礼な態度をとる [そんな失礼なことを言う] 必要はありません。
大人同士で態度・発言を注意するなら rude (失礼な) がおすすめ
「上から下」という立場の違いを前提としないから
That’s rude.
それは失礼ですよ。
Don’t be rude.
失礼なことをするな・言うな。
You’re being rude.
失礼なことをやっていますよ。
など、便利に使える
【攻撃的な発言であることを理解する】
ここで挙げた表現は There’s no need to be rude. を除き、上の立場の者が下を指導するときに使われる
それ以外の – 対等な立場の大人同士の – 状況で使えば、深刻な対立を引き起こす。注意してお使いください!
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[「どうでもいいよ。宿題なんて、やりたくなったらやるから」と言う子どもに、親が注意します]
「ちょっと待ちなさい。自分を何様だと思ってるの?私にその口の利き方はやめなさい。宿題。今すぐ」
【解答例】
Excuse me? Who do you think you are? Watch your tone of voice with me. Homework. Now.
【解説】
・Excuse me は「ちょっと待ちなさい・何を言っているの」など、相手の発言を聞きとがめる場合にも用られる
・Watch your tone of voice with me. では、with me (私に対して) が加えられている。つけなくても意味は通じるが、こちらも覚えておく
☆PRONUNCIATION POLISH
D: All right everyone. Now let’s turn it around, and focus on today’s pronunciation polish. Here’s today’s phrase.
I just don’t see why it matters so much.
Let’s master this together. First up, the “t” sound in “just” and “don’t” will disappear. Let’s practice those together, okay?
– I just don’t
– I just don’t see
Next, let’s join up “matters” and “so,”
– mattersso
– mattersso much
– why it mattersso much
All right. Let’s put it all together,
– I just don’t see why it mattersso much.
All right. Let’s start to speed that up,
– I just don’t see why it mattersso much.
All right. We’re ready for full natural speed. Here we go!
– I just don’t see why it mattersso much.
All right. That’s a great phrase but be careful when you use it. Someone might get angry, yeah? Good work today.
★Ending
O: Hey guys. “Who do you think you are?” is so harsh an expression, isn’t it?
D: It really is, like a verbal slap in the face. It’s very confrontational, for sure.
R: And actually, even if you don’t understand the phrase itself, you’ll probably feel the harshness even through the tone.
D: Yeah, the intonation the facial expression will probably communicate it.
O: So, what’s your advice?
R: Be very careful when you’re using it.
D: If you can avoid it, it’s probably best.
D: But you still need to clean your room.
O: Oh yeah. I’ll do it.
