☆Grasp the Concept

Key Sentence

Everybody loves that civilization.

love は「愛する」 – 大切な美しい感情

like (好き) より格段に深く、強い単語

I like you, but I don’t love you.

には、その強さの違いが表れている

①love

I love you more than words can express.

love はこういった深い感情のほか、単に「大好き」という意味で使われることもしばしばある

I love popcorn.

I love The Beatles.

など。気軽に使える

②like

How did you like it?

※「どうでした?」と、感想・評価を尋ねる定型文

like に特段の注意事項はなし

③hate

I hate my new boss.

「好きではない」を表す場合、not like を使おう

それよりも強烈な「憎む・大嫌い」なら hate になる

怒りにつながる激しい感情

④dislike

I dislike strong coffee.

dislike は、会話ではそれほど頻繁には使われない

この単語はクッキリと「嫌い」を表すため、穏やかな表現 not like (好きではない) が優先される

会話でネガティブなことを言いたくはありませんよね💦

☆Practical Usage

・you like them
・love cats
・hate them

「ねぇ聞いて、あなたのことはすてきだと思っています。本当に好きです。でも私は、心の底からネコが大好きなんです。あなたはネコが大嫌い。あなたはネコと一緒に暮らせなくて、私はネコなしでは生きていけない。これが、うまくいくはずありません」

☆Pronunciation Polish

D: All right everyone. It’s time for the pronunciation polish! Are you ready? All right. Here’s today’s phrase,

What do you think he found there?

Let’s zoom in on a couple of points. First up is “what + do”. There are actually many ways we can approach this. But for today, let’s start with,

– Whatdo

All right. Next up, we have “he”. Remember, the “h” sound will disappear,

– he
– he found

Oops! Now, let’s zoom in on “found”. The “d” sound will become very small, almost disappear. It’ll sound like this,

– found
– he found there
– think he found there
– Whatdo you think he found there?

All right. And other quick bonus. Let’s try one more variation for “what + do”,

– Wha(t)do
– Wha(t)do you think he found there?

All right. Great work today.

★Ending

R: Oh, by the way sensei, “I like your new glasses.”

O: Oh thanks. I like it as well.

R: Sensei, I’m just practicing.

D: Oh, you got him, you got him! Good!!

【解答例】
Look, I think you’re great. I really like you. But I love cats, through and through. You hate them. You can’t live with them, and I can’t live without them. This would never work.

・Lookは「聞いて」と相手の注意を引きつける表現

・through and through は「まったく・心の底から」 – through はトンネル状のものを通過するイメージ(6月号 Lesson 53)。このフレーズには、最初から最後までといった完全性が感じられている

・would は「この関係を続けたとしても」といった仮定的な状況を踏まえている
