1⃣ 朝、久しぶりに会う別の部署で働く同僚にあいさつされました。挨拶を返してから彼の近況について尋ねてみましょう。

Coworker: Oh, hi.

You:
A: やぁ。久しぶりだね。元気にしていた？

Hi. Long time no see. How have you been?

・Long time no see. How have you been? は、久しぶりに会う人への非常に自然なあいさつ (Lesson 3)、まとめて覚えてもOK

B: 先月、君の部署でチームリーダーに昇進したって聞いたんだけど、それってすごいね。本当なの？

I heard that you got promoted to team leader in your department last month, which sounds amazing. Is that true?

**department: 部署

・heard (聞いた) の内容をthat以下が展開するリポート文の形

・got promoted は get を用いた受動態 (～された)。promote は「昇進させる」であるため「昇進する」には受動態を用いる

・「, which ~」は「昇進した」内容を受けて「ちなみにそれは～」という形

2⃣ 友人の飼っているカブトムシが死んだそうです。お悔やみの言葉を述べ、慰めてください。

Friend: My pet beetle died this morning.
ペットのカブトムシが今朝死んじゃったんだ。

You:
A: 本当に気の毒に思うよ。あなたにとってそれがどれほどつらいのか、想像もつかない。

I’m really sorry. I can’t imagine how tough that is for you.

B: ペットを失うのは本当に心が痛いけれど、あなたはひとりじゃないよ。いつでも話したくなったら、僕はそばにいるからね。

It hurts, but you’re not alone. If you ever want to talk, I’m here.

・ it はペットを失う状況全般を受けている

・次の文の ever は強調。ever のイメージは at any time (いつでも) であるため、この単語には「いつでも・気が向いたときに・少しでも」と、温かさが感じられる

O: Hey guys. Loosing a pet hurts, right?
ねえみんな。ペットを亡くすのって、本当につらくない？

D: It sure does. I remember every pet I’ve ever lost.
本当そうだよ。今までのペットたち、みんな覚えてるもん。

R: It hurts a lot but it’s important that, if when that happens. You feel your feelings. It’s okay to be sad for a while. And remember you are not alone.
そう、すごく悲しいことだけど、そういうときは自分の感情をちゃんと受け止めることが大切。しばらくの間、悲しみに暮れたっていい。でも忘れないで、あなたは一人じゃないんだよ。
