1⃣ 部内の会議でせっかちな同僚が、他の人の発言中にぶしつけに割り込んで話を始めました。アドバイスをしてあげましょう。

Coworker: [割り込んで] No, that’s not the issue. The real problem is marketing.

You:
①ねぇ、誰かが話しているときに割り込むべきではないと思いますよ。

Hey, I don’t think you should interrupt when someone is speaking.

・I don’t think you should ~ はやわらかい表現だが、しっかりと相手に意図が通じる (Lesson 43)

・interrupt は「遮る」

②あなたが割り込むと、ほかの人が自分の考えをはっきり伝えるのが難しくなります。私たちはみんな、話を聞いてもらう機会があってしかるべきです。

When you interrupt, it makes it hard for others to express their ideas clearly. We all deserve a chance to be heard.

**deserve a chance to ~: ～する機会があってしかるべき

・it makes it hard for others to ~ は、目的語説明型 (SVOC) の make it hard (それを難しくする) が主たる形。何を難しくするのか – it の内容をto以下で展開している

・deserve は「～に値する・～の価値がある」

2⃣ バッグを電車に置いてきてしまった外国人旅行者が駅のホームにいます。アドバイスしましょう。

International tourist: I left my bag on the train.

You:
①すぐに駅員さんに届け出ることを強くおすすめします。

I strongly recommend that you report it to the station staff right away.

**report: ～を届け出る

・ I strongly recommend that ~ は、アドバイスの定型表現 (Lesson 42)

・right awayは「すぐに」。すぐに行動を起こすことを示す

②早く届け出るほど、戻ってくる可能性は高くなります。ご一緒しましょうか？

The sooner you report it, the better the chances of getting it back. Shall I accompany you?

**accompany: ～と一緒に行く、～に同行する

・文全体は「the + 比較級 ~, the + 比較級…」(～すればするほど･･･) – 比例関係を表す形。the が使われるのは「～すればするほど (その分だけ)…」と、両者がつながっていることを表すため

・Shall I ~? は「～しましょうか？」典型的な助力を申し出る表現

★Ending

O: Hey guys. Have you ever left something on the train?
ねえ、みんな。電車に何か置き忘れたことってある？

D: Oh, yeah. I left my briefcase on the overhead rack once. The station staff said it’s a loop line. So if you wait one hour, it will probably just return. And lo and behold, it was still on the train. I said, “Wow, Japan is amazing!”
ある！一回、網棚の上に書類カバンを置き忘れたんだ。そしたら駅員さんが「環状線だから、(1周周った) 1時間待てばたぶん戻ってきますよ」って言うんだよ。で、なんとビックリ！本当にまだ電車の中にカバンがあったんだ！日本ってマジで凄い、って思ったね。

**lo and behold: 驚いたことに、なんとびっくり！

R: You know, actually that’s one of my biggest fears which is why I never put anything on the overhead rack.
それ、私が一番恐れてることの一つなの。だから私は絶対に網棚の上には荷物を置かないようにしてる。

O: Ah, that’s a good idea.
ああ、それがいいね。
