☆Words & Phrases

**the final version: 最終版

Hello, Mr. Cole. I’m glad you liked the final version of Codey the Bear.
こんにちは、コールさん。コーディ・ザ・ベアの最終版を気に入っていただけてうれしいです。

**place an order: 注文をする
**unit: (商品の) 1個
**delivery: 配送
**complicated: 複雑な

I did. I’d like to place an order for 500 units, though the delivery will be a bit complicated.
ええ、とても。500個発注したいのですが、配送が少し複雑になりそうでして。

※place an order は put in an order でもOKですが、place は put よりも「正確に」が漂う単語です!

**walk A through B: AにBを丁寧に教える

Of course. Could you walk me through it?
承知しました。詳細を教えていただけますか?

Sure. Please send 20 units to our San Francisco office first for quality and voice testing.
はい。まず20個をサンフランシスコのオフィスに送ってもらい、品質と音声機能のテストをしたいです。

**ship: ~を発送する
**remaining: 残っている
**partner warehouse: 提携先の倉庫

If everything checks out, ship another 180 there, and the remaining 300 to our partner warehouse in Seattle.
すべて問題なければ、さらに180個を同じくそこへ、残りの300個をシアトルの提携倉庫へ送ってください。

※warehouse は「倉庫」です。覚えておきましょう!

**go over: [理解するために] ~をおさらいする

I see… Would you mind going over that once more?
なるほど…。もう一度ご説明いただいてもよろしいでしょうか?

☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY

説明ルール

I‘m glad you liked the final version of Codey the Bear.
私は、あなたがコーディ・ザ・ベアの最終版を気に入ったことをうれしく思います。

この文では動詞句の後ろに you liked 以下の節 (文中で部品として使われる「小さな文」) が置かれ、感情の原因を説明している

「説明ルール: 説明は後ろに置く」が生み出す形

他動詞から主語の「性質」へ

If everything checks out, ship another 180 there.
もしすべて問題なければ、さらに180個をそこへ送ってください。

check ~ out は「~を確認・点検する」

このフレーズがここでは 「(確認・点検の結果) ~は問題ない」という意味で使われていることに注意

このように、他動詞はしばしば、主語の性質を述べる使い方を持つ

I washed that shirt easily.
そのシャツを簡単に洗った: 他動詞

That shirt washes easily.
そのシャツは簡単に洗える: 性質

など

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS

Key Sentence

Would you mind going over that once more?
もう一度ご説明いただいてもよろしいでしょうか?

フォーマルな聞き返し

Would you mind ~?
~していただいてもよろしいでしょうか?

は Would [Could] you ~? よりも丁寧度の高い表現

それは、mind (~を気にする) が使われているから

相手の心理状態への配慮が丁寧さの源泉

go over ~
[理解するために] ~をおさらいする

は、単純な繰り返しというより内容説明を求める状況で使われる

①フォーマルに 1

I apologize, but could you repeat that for me?
申し訳ありませんが、私のために繰り返していただけますか?

I apologize は I’m sorry よりしっかりした謝罪の言葉

この表現でフォーマル感がグッと上がる

また for me から、聞き漏らしたことが相手の問題ではなく「私を助けてもらいたい」という意図があることが感じられ、丁寧さが上がっている

②フォーマルに 2

Could I ask you to repeat that?
繰り返しをお願いしてもよろしいでしょうか?

この文は直接相手に繰り返しを求めているわけではなく、繰り返しを「頼むこ と」の是非を尋ねている

ひどく間接的な言い回しであり、その分フォーマル感が上がる

③フォーマルに 3

I beg your pardon?
もう一度お願いできますか?

古風で上品、フォーマルな聞き返しフレーズ

ただ、失礼なことを言われたときに抗議として使われることもあり、言い方に注意する必要あり

☆PRACTICAL USAGE

[相手の発言に理解できない専門用語があり、聞き返します]

「すみませんが、それを私のために繰り返していただけますか?なじみの ない単語がいくつか使われていたので」

【解答例】
I’m sorry, but could you repeat that for me? You used some words that I’m unfamiliar with. that I’m unfamiliar with (    ).

【解説】
・some words 以降は、関係代名詞節による修飾。with の後ろに空所 (    ) があり、「私がよく知らない – いくつかの単語」となっている

・be unfamiliar with ~ は「~をよく知らない・~に慣れていない」

☆PRONUNCIATION POLISH

D: Okay everyone. It’s time for today’s pronunciation polish. Here’s today’s phrase,

Would you mind going over that once more?

Okay. I wonder, could you hear where we changed the sound? I bet you have a feeling for it now. All right. First up is “would” plus “you,”

– Wouldyou

Great. Next up, the “d” sound in “mind” will become very weak,

– Wouldyou mind

All right. Next up, we’ll join “going over,”

– goingover

And the “t” sound at the end of “that” will disappear,

– that
– that once more
– goingover that once more
– Wouldyou mind goingover that once more

All right. Let’s put it together and then speed up,

– Wouldyou mind goingover that once more?

We’re ready for natural speed. Here we go!

– Wouldyou mind goingover that once more?

Hey hey, good job! And if you need me to go over it again, just hit repeat. Great work.

★Ending

D: Ah ~~, sensei! I’m sorry but could you repeat that for me? You used a saying that I’m not familiar with.

D: That means we should see a bigger picture.

R: Yeah, my ceiling is pretty big.
