Lesson 104 発言パターン 真意を尋ねる①
★Opening
D: Well, be careful sensei. It’s not safe to drive when you’re tired.
☆Words & Phrases
**in a good mood: 上機嫌で、ご機嫌で、気分が良い (状態)
Morning, Sarah. You seem to be in a good mood today.
おはよう、サラ。今日はなんだか機嫌がよさそうだね。
※mood は、心理状態を表す単語です。「in a bad mood: 不機嫌で、ご機嫌斜めで」も使います!
**cut back on ~: ~を減らす
**weekend shift: 週末のシフト
**apply for~: ~に申し込む、~に志願する
**scholarship: 奨学金
Morning! Yeah, I feel a lot better. I cut back on my weekend shifts, and I’m planning to apply for scholarships for next year.
おはよう!うん、だいぶ気分がよくなったの。週末のシフトを減らして、来年の奨学金に応募しようと思ってるんだ。
I was just thinking about asking if you wanted to go for a drive this weekend.
この週末にドライブに行かないかって、ちょうど聞こうと思ってたんだ。
※if you wanted と過去形なのは「仮定法」の形で、丁寧な雰囲気を加えています!
**That sounds perfect.: それは完璧に聞こえます。/いいですね。
Really? That sounds perfect. I’d love to.
ほんと?それいいね。ぜひ行きたい。
※I’d love to. は、I’d like to. の強調表現です。I’d = I would
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
比較級の強調
I feel a lot better.
ずいぶん気分がよくなりました。
a lot が比較級 better を「ずいぶん・はるかに」と強調している
比較級の強調には very などといった単純な強意副詞を使うことができない
それは比較級が「差分」に注目する表現だから
この状況では以前の気分と現在のそれを比べて、現在のほうが better だとその「差」が意識されている
そのため、強調するには「差が大きい」ことを表す a lot, much などが使われる
難易・印象を表す形容詞がとる形
That’s great to hear.
それを聞けてすばらしいです。
難易・印象を表す形容詞に特徴的な形
主語の that が hear の目的語と一致し「hear that (それを聞く)」の意味関係を作っている
ゆっくり解釈すると「それは、それを聞くのがすばらしい」ということ
He’s hard to understand.
彼は、理解するのが大変だ。
など、頻繁に使われる形

☆ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS
What do you mean?
どういう意味ですか?
この文は、相手の真意を尋ねる頻用文
mean は「~を意味する」そこから「あなたは何を伝えようとしているのか?」と、意図をただす内容につながっている
What do you mean by that?
それは何を意味しているの?
と、by that で相手の言葉をピンポイントで指摘することもできる
①mean を使って
What does that mean?
それは何を意味しているのですか?
主語が you ではなく相手の発言 (that) であるため、言葉の説明を求める感触が強くなる
mean を使った表現には、
How do you mean?
どういう意味ですか?
もある
how (どのようにして) を使うことにより、発言に至ったプロセスを尋ねる感触が強くなる
②say を使って
Why do you say that?
どうしてそう言うのですか?
say を使って真意を尋ねることは簡単にできる
相手の発言の引き金となった動機を尋ねて、
What makes you say that?
何があなたにそう言わせるのですか?
と尋ねてもよい
③そのほか
Where is that coming from?
それは、どこから来ているのですか?
「どこから来ている」が、発言の背景 (理由・根拠など) を尋ねる意味となっている文
I can see where you’re coming from.
あなたの考えの出どころがわかります。
という表現もある↑
↓ほかに、
Run that by me one more time, would you?
もう一度説明していただけますか?
も役に立つ!説明の繰り返しを求めながら真意を探る表現
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[「今日のプレゼンの出来は最悪だった」と落ち込んでいる同僚に]
「どうしてそう言うの?私はその場にいたけど、よかったと思うよ。もしミスをしていたとしても、それに気づいたのはあなただけだよ」
【解答例】
Why do you say that? I was there, and I think it was fine. If you made mistakes, only you noticed them.
【解説】
・fine は「問題ない」
・最後は過去の出来事を「たとえ〜であったとしても」と条件節にしている

★Ending
O: That’s totally me. I always dwell on the small mistakes I made even though I’m the only one who notices them.
R: Sensei, don’t worry. I notice all of your mistakes.
D: Roza! No!! You can’t say that!
O: I could see that coming!
R: No, I just didn’t want you to feel alone.
D: Everyone, mistakes aren’t as important as how you recover. So, you’re okay, sensei.
