ちなみに発言系の代表的な動詞 speak, say, tell, talk の中で、この型をとることができるのは tell だけ！
could のイメージ

この文で使われた could は can の「過去形」でありながら、過去を表しているわけではなく、can の「控えめ表現」
can が強く現実的な主張を行うのに対し、could はグッと退いた、控えめな表現になる

have と進行形との関係を説明しておきましょう。have は静的な動詞であるため、 生き生きとした活動の最中を表す進行形は、通常相性の悪い形です。たとえ「持っている」と訳せても、(✖) I’m having a pen. とは言えません。ですが「行為」を表す場合には、I was having dinner when the phone rang. (電話が鳴ったとき、私は夕食をとっていました) など、進行形が可能になります。進行形の可否は動詞単体ではなく、動詞を含めた動詞句全体の意味によることを覚えておきましょう。
