過去を表さない助動詞の過去形
助動詞の過去形は、現在形の will, can, may, の「控えめバージョン」として使われることが頻繁にある。
この文の might は may（かもしれない）の過去形だが、ここでは「ひょっとして～かもしれない」。may は50%程度の可能性を表しますが、might は30%程度。may の強さから一歩退いた「控えめバージョン」として使われている。
