① I’m glad to see you’ve got your appetite back.

感情の原因を表す to不定詞
am glad(うれしい)の原因を to see 以下が表しているが、それは to不定詞に「感情の原因を表す」といった特殊な「用法」があるから?いえ、そんなことはありません

「原因」の意味は to不定詞の位置から導かれている。この文で to不定詞は am glad の後ろにあり「説明ルール:説明は後ろに置く」によってその説明となる

「うれしいのです」の説明なら、普通その感情を抱いた原因となるはず。だからこの to不定詞は原因を表すと「解釈される」。to不定詞自体に、複雑な意味はない

 

② You should go to the government office directly.

should のイメージ
助動詞 should のイメージは「進むべき道」。このイメージは「この道を進みなさい」と解釈すれば「助言(〜すべき)」を生み出し、事態は「この道に沿って進む」と考えれば「確信(~するはず)」を表す。ここでは「助言」の意味で使われている

I’m confused by it.

confuse は「混乱・ 困惑させる」で、混乱を表す最も一般的な動詞

その過去分詞 confused は「混乱して」で、人の感情を形容する表現。ごちゃごちゃしていて、きちんと考えたり理解できないということ。

「混乱」を表す表現

① His explanations are confusing.

→ confusing は「混乱させるような」で、人を混乱させる事物に使われる

 

② I was bewildered by their decision.
I was perplexed by their decision.
I was baffled by their decision.

→ すべて「困惑・当惑させる」という動詞の過去分詞

bewildered は驚いて動けない感じ

perplexed は知的な困惑で、論理的筋道が見えない感じ

baffled は f の音があるせいか、ホワホ ワッとした霧に包まれているような感じ

 

③ My thinking is messed up.

The situation has me messed up.

I can’t make heads or tails of this.

My mind is all over the place.

→「混乱」は「ごちゃごちゃ」とたいへん仲よし。
