この文はリポート文。この形では「時制の一致」が頻繁に行われる
時制の一致は、主節動詞と従属節内の動詞が「過去 – 過去」の連鎖を作ること。この文でも said – was と連鎖が起こっている
日本語では「いいと言っていた」となり、特にこのような連鎖は起こらない
この連鎖の理由は、この形で主節動詞の内容を従属節が展開していることにある
いわば、主節動詞が「箱」で従属節がその「中身」の関係
箱が過去に置かれたら、その中身も当然過去にあるはず、という非常に当たり前の類推に基づく形である
現在完了形のイメージ
I haven’t talked to him in a while.
現在完了形 (have+過去分詞) のイメージは「(今に) 迫ってくる」
