Lesson 131 理解を表す動詞 – understand, grasp, comprehend, follow

なぜ同等比較を表す表現は、この例のように as が2つ登場するのか？
実はこの2つの as には「指定ルール」と「説明ルール」が働いている
この文の as big as では、
最初の as は big の前に置かれ「同じくらい big です」 と big のレベルを指定（指定ルール）
後ろの as は as big が何と同じなのかを説明「山と同じくらいですよ」（説明ルール）
否定の前倒し

思考系動詞を含む文の否定の仕方には、クセがある
この文は「作ることができるとは思わない」と think が否定されている
「作ることができないと思う」と言っても同じような内容を表すことができるが、英語はこうした場合、思考系動詞を否定する
「～だとは思わない」が「～ではないと思う」に優先する。覚えておくこと！

ここではwh節を使い「どのようにして〜が可能だったのかを理解する」としている
ちなみに「could have + 過去分詞」は、過去の事柄に対して控えめに可能性を述べる形
「理解する」には、

といった例に限らず、さまざまな動詞を使うことができる
①grasp

grasp は「つかむ」→ 把握する・キッチリ理解する
②comprehend
It’s hard to comprehend how big it is.
comprehend も「つかむ」がイメージの動詞
com- (完全に) + prehend (つかむ)
という語源のフォーマルな響きを持った動詞
難解な内容を完全につかむといった感じ
③follow
I can’t follow what you’re trying to say.
follow は「ついていく」 → 理解する
