I had some problems with the casting. Like, they should have used a blonde-haired boy for the main character. In the book he is a blonde.

この文の they は不特定の人を表す使い方
話し手自身を含まないこの代名詞は「世間・一般の人々」あるいは、この例のように漠然とそうした組織 (や組織に属する人々) を表す
助動詞 + 完了形
They should have used a blonde-haired boy for the main character.
この文の should have used は、以前の事柄について推量などを行う「助動詞 + 完了形」のひとつ
should は「～すべき」であるため、should have used は過去の事柄について「使うべきだった」と後悔を表している
