Lesson 97 助動詞相当のフレーズ③ – used to, had better

☆Grammar and Vocabulary
My parents used to listen to your songs all the time.
listen の「耳を傾ける」
動詞 listen は「聞く」と訳されるが、hear とは異なり積極的な「耳を傾ける」という動作を指す。
同じような使い分けが、視覚系動詞でも行われる。look は「目をやる」という積極的な動作であるのに対し、see は「見える」で映像が目に入っていることを示す。
That makes me feel good.
目的語説明型（SVOC）
説明語句に動詞原形を用いた目的語説明型（SVOC）の文で、「me が feel good する状況を make する」ということ。
make を用いたこの形は、強い力で状況を作り出すことを意味し「使役構文」としておなじみの形！

used to は「（かつて・以前は）～したもの・～であったものだった」
「過去と現在のコントラスト」にフォーカスがあり「今はそうではない」が色濃く感じられる助動詞相当のフレーズ
この文では「以前そうであったような」と過去の状態を表しているが、
I used to play tennis on Sundays.
と、過去の習慣的行為を表すこともできる。

過去と現在のコントラストを意識しながら練習しましょう。 関係代名詞節が使われた文ですが、 語順どおり the singer を最初に意識してくださいね。 以下では、もうひとつの助動詞相当のフレーズ

**railroad crossing:
→ used to が過去の状態を表している。would は「過去の習慣」のみで、状態を表すことはできない
would の「過去の習慣」の復習は↓
② You’d better go to the hospital right now.
→ You’d better は You had better の短縮形。「had better + 動詞原形」は「～したほうがいい」と訳されるが「さもないと困ったことになる」という切迫感が強く感じられる表現
③ You’d better get some rest, otherwise you’ll be tired.
You’d better get some rest, or (else) you’ll be tired.
→ had better の「さもないと」を明確にした例
otherwise は「ほかの道を行くと→さもないと
or else は「ほかに」を加え強調している

※Did they? は相手の発言を軽い疑問文で受ける「相づち疑問文」です。Did they use(d) to listen to my songs all the time? ということですね！
**perform live: ライブを行う、生演奏を行う
