Lesson 101 説明ルール – 基礎

★Opening

R: Wow! Look at all this English! I’m so excited for today’s lesson. This is Akino Roza.

D: And I’m David Evans. Ooh, I’m excited for this golden rule. Let’s go!!

☆Words & Phrases

There are so many from other countries like Germany. – Ah, yes, those are very expensive.

I’d like to play on a few. Can we ask the staff?

**you know:
**someday:
You know, it’s my dream to buy a grand piano. – Someday, Seiichiro, someday.

☆Grammar and Vocabulary

I don’t think you can without asking.

否定の前倒し
英語では「~ではないと思う」と内容を否定するより「~だとは思わない」と思考動詞を否定するクセがある。

この文でも、I think you can’t ~(~できないと思う)ではなく、I don’t think you can ~(~できるとは思わない)となっている。

日本語では「~ではないと思う」と「~だとは思わない」は同じような頻度で使われるが、英語では圧倒的に「~だとは思わない」優先!

It’s my dream to buy a grand piano.

it ~ to …
it は「受ける」単語。この文で使われた it ~ to… は、心に浮かんだ情景を it で受け、文を始める形。

この文では心の中の情景をまず it で受け「私の夢なんです」と始めている。これだけでは何が夢なのかが相手に伝わらないため、to以下で追いかけて説明し、「グランドピアノを買うことが、ね」となる。

まず it そして to… で追いかける、それがこの形のリズム。

☆Target Forms

The man in the brown jacket standing in front of the elevator works here.

英語と日本語では(主語を除けば)語順が反転する

この文の in the brown jacket ~ は The man の後ろに 配置されているが、日本語訳では「〜茶色のジャケットを着た – 男性」と「男性」の前

英語の修飾表現には「説明ルール: 説明は後ろに置く」があり、それが英語の語順を生み出している

語順の違いは、私たちの英語上達を阻む大きな原因!今月は、説明ルールに従った表現を練習し、英語の語順を克服する

Practice
日本語は修飾全般が前置き。でも英語では「説明は後ろ」。The man を説明する意識で in the brown jacket と standing in front of the elevator を並べていきましょう。

The man in the brown jacket
↓
The man in the brown jacket
standing in front of the elevator works here.

① The logo on your shirt is very cool.

→ The logo を on your shirt で説明

② The shop next to the post office sells taiyaki.

→ The shop を next to the post office で説明する意識が大切

③ I want something to drink.

→ -thing/-one/-body で終わる名詞は、something(何か)など漠然とした意味であるため、後ろでどういった something なのかを説明することがしばしばある。ここでは to不定詞の to drink で、「何か – 飲むための、ですよ」という説明

★Practice

D: All right everyone. It’s time for today’s practice. We’ll focus today on giving extra information. Remember, in English, we put extra information after the main word, so “the logo – on your shirt”, just like that. All right. Let’s practice.

R: Okay guys. Repeat after us,

– The log on your shirt, The log on your shirt
– The logo on your shirt is very cool.

D: All right. Here is the next one,

– The shop next to the post office, The shop next to the post office
– The shop next to the post office sells taiyaki.

R: One more,

– something to drink, something to drink
– I want something to drink.

D: Unlock your potential.

R: Repetition is the key!

D&R: Great work.

③あなたは、あなたのシフトを代わってくれる人を見つけることはできますか?私たちは今、人手不足なのです。

O: Me? Never.

D: No? Roza, can you?

Lesson 101 説明ルール – 基礎
(日本語訳・解説付き)

★Opening

何台か弾いてみたいです。お店の人にお願いできるでしょうか?

※on a few の on は「ピアノなどの機器の上で(何らかの活動をおこなう)」のニュアンスで使われています。I’d like to play on a few pianos. ですね!

**you know:(文頭や文末に添えて)~ですからね
**someday: いつか、いずれは

You know, it’s my dream to buy a grand piano. – Someday, Seiichiro, someday.
グランドピアノを買うというのが僕の夢なものですから – そのうちにね、セイイチロウさん、そのうちに。

※個人宅にあるような縦型の小型のピアノは、Upright Piano(アップライトピアノ)です!
