Lesson 236 会話の原則㉑配慮:やわらかく意見を述べる

Opening

R: Akino Roza here.

D: And I’m David Evans. Regrets… I’ve had a few.

Words & Phrases

**technically:
**though:
Good morning, Roxy. Well, it’s still morning, technically. It’s 11:30, though.

**night shift:
But I make more money on the night shift.

**knock on wood:
I’m fine, Dad. I never get sick, you know. – Knock on wood.

Grammar and Vocabulary

I don’t think you should work so much.

否定の前倒し
この文で話し手は「働くべきではない」と考えているが、I think you shouldn’t ~(私は~すべきではないと思う)よりも、この文の I don’t think you should ~(私は~すべきだとは思わない)のほうが圧倒的に自然な文

それは英語には「否定の前倒し」のクセがあるため。think など「思う系」の動詞を使うとき、従属節内の not を前倒しして「思う」を否定するクセである

この形が好まれるひとつの理由は、相手の意見が肯定的なものか、否定的なものなのかが文の始めに分かるということ。考えてみれば便利なクセである。

I never get sick.

説明型オーバーラッピング(SVC)
I get sick を never で強く否定した文だが、この形は説明型オーバーラッピング(SVC)で、基本は「I = sick ではない」ということ。ただし、この文では意味が薄く単に「=(イコール)」を表すbe動詞ではなく「動き・変化」を表す get が使われているため、その意味が文全体にオーバーラップし「I = sick [にならない]」となる

Typical Expressions

I don’t think you should work so much.

キツく・強く響かない言い方を心がけることは、非常に大切

この文では You shouldn’t ~(~すべきではない)と言うことも可能だが、I think(私は思う)を加え I don’t think you should ~ とし、やわらかい表現としている

表現を和らげるコツのひとつは、この例のように「思います」と主観を加えるところにある

やわらかい表現を可能にする言い回し

I’m afraid this is not the right time to ~.

I feel this is not the right time to ~.

→「思う・感じる」といった主観を加え、意見を和らげている

afraid は相手にとって好都合ではないことを「思う」

feel(感じる)は think などより理詰めではない分、さらにやわらかい表現となる

It seems to me that you don’t practice enough.
It appears to me that you don’t practice enough.

seem, appear は「~のように見える・思われる」で、主張を和らげる典型的な言い回し

seem のほうがやや深みを感じるフレーズ

It seems [appears] that ~ の形や、He seems [appears] to ~(彼は~のように見える)などの seem [appear] to の形もマークしておく

It feels like you’re missing my point.

→ 主観をオブラートに包む言い回しは feel(感じる)も得意です。

I can’t help thinking ~.

I can’t help feeling ~.

→「can’t help + 動詞-ing形」(~せざるをえない)も、think, feel を用いれば発言を和らげることができる
