☆Grammar and Vocabulary
① He said he needed the room for something, and that we shouldn’t go in there.
that節の that
said の内容を展開する節が2つ。
said ~, and that…
となっている。この以降に現れた that は、ほぼ省略されない。なぜなら、and 以降が said と距離が離れすぎており、said の内容なのですよとしっかり導き、橋渡しをすることが必要なため。（said）that we shouldn’t go in there だということを意識しながら、音読・暗唱すること！
② Someone dressed up like a space alien.
-thing/-one/-body で終わる名詞は後ろに説明を置く
someone の後ろに、その説明「異星人のような仮装をした」が続き、全体として大きな名詞を作っている。
someone のように -thing/-one/-body で終わる名詞は、このように説明が後続することがしばしばある。それは、こうした単語は意味が薄いため。「誰か」と言っても明確な意味を結ばない。そこで「どんな誰か」なのかについての説明が続く。

know 以外の動詞が知識を表すことは非常に頻繁にあり、しっかり慣れておく必要がある。
① I’ve heard that you like playing video games.
→ 現在にフォーカスする現在完了形 I’ve [= I have] heard で「現在知っている」に力点を置いている
I hear that you like playing video games.
→ I hear は「習慣」を表す現在形、つまり「しばしば耳にしている」ということ
② I heard about Dan’s new business.
I heard about Dan’s new idea.
I heard about Dan’s new venture.
→ hear about は about があるため、いろいろ詳しい内容を聞く感触
I’ve never heard of such a thing.
→ hear of は 「耳にする」 程度の限られた内容
③ I can tell the difference.
I can’t tell the difference.
→「言うことができる（できない）」は「わかる（わからない）」につながる
④ Rumor has it that we’re getting downsized.
It is rumored that we’re getting downsized.
→ rumor は「うわさ」、人々がひそひそ話している感じ
Word on the street is we’re getting downsized.
→ word on the street は街中で公然と話されている内容。
