☆Grammar & Vocabulary
① There’s another spaceship in orbit around Mars.
「there + be動詞」は「ある・いる」を表し、今まで話題に上っていない事物を初めて話題に引き込む表現。日本語訳だけに頼るとニュアンスが分からず使えないので注意。
in orbit around Mars の語順に注目。日本語訳は「火星の→軌道上」だが、英語は「in orbit → around Mars」で in orbit が後ろから説明されている。「説明ルール：説明は後ろに置く」の語順になっている。
② How can that be possible?
強い疑念を表す can
can のイメージ「潜在」は秘めた力を見抜く感触。この文の can は「潜在的性質：～しうる、～することがある」を表している。
how は「やり方・方法」
つまり、「どう目を凝らしてもそうなりうる道筋が見えない＝そんなわけはない」という強い疑念を表している。
