**I’m good. [I’m all right.]: まあまあですよ。
Morning. How are you today? – Morning! I’m good, thanks. You?
おはようございます。今日はどうですか？ – おはようございます！元気ですよ、ありがとう。君は？
I’m all right, but…could you keep this to yourself? – Of course. What’s going on?
まあまあです、でも…これは内緒にしてくれますか？ – もちろん。どうしたんですか？
※What’s going on? は「どうしたんですか？」ですね。よく使われるので覚えておきましょう！
**transfer: ～を転任・転勤させる
**we’ll [we will] have to ~: 私たちは〜しなくてはならないだろう
My husband might be transferred to Boston, and if that happens, we’ll have to move. – Oh, I see. That’s big news.
夫がボストンに転勤になるかもしれなくて、そうなると引っ越さなきゃならないんです – え、そうなんですね。それは大きな話ですね。
※might は may の控え目表現で「ひょっとして～かもしれない」ですね！
**confirm: ～を確認する
Yeah, but nothing’s confirmed yet. I don’t want the whole neighborhood talking.
ええ、でもまだ決定じゃないんです。ご近所に広まるのは避けたくて。
※confirm を受動態で使うと「確認されてはいない・確かではない」ですね
**My lips are sealed.: 誰にも話しません。
**appreciate: ありがたく思う、感謝する
Don’t worry. My lips are sealed. – Thanks. I really appreciate it.
心配しないでください。口は堅いから – ありがとうございます。本当に感謝しています。
※seal は「封をする・封印をする」という動詞。My lips are sealed. はこのまままとめて覚えておきましょう！
☆GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
「前提」には現在形
If that happens, we’ll have to move.
もしそれが起こったら、私たちは引っ越さなければならないでしょう。
この文の if節は未来の条件を示しているのに、なぜ現在形が使われているのか？
それは「それが起こる」のが前提となっているから
「もし～なら」という場合、起こっていることが前提になり状況が展開する
そのため「起こっている」を意味する現在形となる
目的語説明型 (SVOC)
I don’t want the whole neighborhood talking.
私は、近所中が話すことを望みません。
目的語説明型 (SVOC) で「動詞-ing形」が説明語句として使われている
the whole neighborhood = talking の状況を want しない
つまり「ご近所中のうわさになりたくない」ということ
目的語説明型 (SVOC) の説明語句には、いろいろなものが使われる

秘密厳守を求める表現
to のイメージは「指し示す」
相手自身を指し示しながら「そこにキープして」、つまりリリースするなということ
同種の表現にはいろいろある
①秘密を keep して
Please keep it under your hat.
秘密にしてください。
「秘密を keep する」という表現はいろいろある
この文は「it = under your hat という状態を keep して」ということ
「帽子の下」が秘密である ことを表している
単純に、
Can you keep a secret?
秘密を守れますか？
もOK
親しい友人同士の会話なら、
Keep your mouth shut about it, OK?
それについては黙ってて、いいね？
といった強い言い方も使われる
②言わないで
Don’t tell anyone about this.
このことは誰にも言わないで。
「言わないで」も、秘密であることを伝えることができる
You cannot tell anyone about this.
という言い方もある
③2人の間だけ
This is just between you and me.
これは2人だけの話です。
「2人の間だけ」が秘密であることを示す
This must stay private.
これは内密にしてください。
I can’t have this getting out.
これが外に漏れるのは困ります。
など、いろいろな表現が使える
stay は「とどまる」
have this getting out は「これが外に出る (漏れる) という状況を have する」
ということ
④信頼・約束
I’m trusting you not to tell anyone.
誰にも言わないと信じていますよ。
相手への信頼に訴えかける表現
Promise me you won’t say a word.
ひと言も言わないと約束して。
は、約束による縛り
☆PRACTICAL USAGE
[友人に秘密であることを念入りに伝えましょう]
「秘密を守れる？ちょっとしたことを知ったんだ。話すけど、これは内緒にしなくちゃいけないよ。これは君と僕の間だけのこと、いい？」
【解答例】
Can you keep a secret? I just found out about something. I’ll tell you, but this must stay private. This is just between you and me, OK?
【解説】
・find out は「(情報などを) 見つけ出す」
・I’ll tell you の will は「意志 (～するよ)」の will
